Reflections on 2013...

What a year it has been...filled with highs and lows both from a personal standpoint and professional. Looking back I'd say the top three moments of the year would have to be my acceptance and award in to the Cape Cod For Pastels Only show. Getting in was one of my goals (I worked very hard for this) however the award was not in the plan. This was icing on the cake.

Robin's Fall Plein Air Workshop was definitely a highlight of the year. Not only does she host and incredible workshop (stay tuned for her one day studio workshop on February 8th) but I was able to put together four nice pieces. I will post those shortly, but for now here are some of the images I photographed while painting in Chatham, MA. I will also post some more from time to time.

Beautiful sunrise in Chatham.

My painting location at Boat Meadow in Eastham, MA

Another sunrise off Chatham Light.

Found this little guy basking on the top (bottom?) of a capsized dingy at the Chatham Town Landing.

Some other highlights included my Terry Ludwig Award for "Old School" at the Pastel Society of New Hampshire "It's Pastel" show was probably the best show I've ever visited so this was quite an honor. The fall open studio show was great this year where I met some wonderful new friends and bumped into some old.

I bought some new pastels and supplies...Oh and I bought some art supplies. And did I mention I bought some pastels...and more...and more...haha. Yes the Pastel Society of New Hampshire held quite a trade show in Manchester this year, thank you!

Most importantly being supported by you, my friends means more to me than anything. I couldn't do it  without you and wouldn't be here if it weren't for your heartfelt support and kind words.

So THANK YOU!

Yes, I'm leaving out the bad for a reason. As I said, it's time to move forward. 2014 promises to be a big year. As I mentioned in my last newsletter I already have BIG NEWS so you'll have to check back VERY soon to find out.

Thanks again and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

"OLDS COOL 2" 6x8 Pastel on Wallis

Here's my most recent pastel...a 58 Olds I photographed on a trip to cape cod recently. Hard to pick a section of the car to paint, but I had to go with the tail light...some incredible detail I couldn't pass up. This was challenging in a small format but I'm happy with the results.

Fall Update!

I hope everyone is enjoying the Fall! I had a very busy end to the summer and a equally busy start to the Autumn season.

Just to quickly recap I had two pastels accepted into the Newburyport Art Associations Fall Juried Show Part 1. One of my accepted pieces is:

"Watching you, Watching me"
12 x 12 Oil

The show just ended to make room for the Fall Juried show part two. Sadly I do not have enough work available to submit to the show. It will still be worth the visit so if you have time, the show runs from November 1 through November 30.

I also have recently been the recipient of two wonderful  honors...

First, I had two pieces accepted into the Pastel Society of New Hampshire’s National Juried Show “It’s Pastel” The show runs from October 24th through November 30th also at the Discover Portsmouth Center. To top it off, the morning of the Reception on October 26th, I was informed that I received the Terry Ludwig Award for my pastel “Old School.” I have to tell you what a huge honor this was...totally unexpected and this arguably was the BEST show I have not only been a part of, but probably have ever seen. A must see if you’re up in the Portsmouth NH area!

Second, this week I was also accepted into the New Hampshire Art Association!!

Wow, What a week it has been!!

Just a reminder...On November 16th and 17th, myself and the other artists’ of my studio in Amesbury will be holding out open studio weekend! The artist reception is Friday evening from 5:30-9pm. IF YOU CAN ONLY MAKE ONE HOLIDAY PARTY THIS YEAR, THIS IS THE ONE!

Spread the word and tell your friends!

Check back soon for more updates. Thanks

-Jeff

For Pastels Only on Cape Cod

"Winter's End"
18x24 Pastel

Winner of "Vermont Pastel Society Award"
Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod For Pastels Only 2013

Back on May 10th in my post "Winter's End" I expressed my excitement about my acceptance into the Cape Cod For Pastels Only show and what a huge honor that was. I worked so hard since my denial the previous year, the acceptance was more than I ever could have hoped for. Just on a whim on the morning of the reception I decided to check my email before our day trip to the cape only to see an email congratulating me on the award I was to receive that evening at the reception! At 5AM I could hardly contain myself. I was awarded the "Vermont Pastel Society Award" by the PPSCC and Judge of awards and juror of selection, Liz Haywood Sullivan, The President of IAPS (International Association of Pastel Societies). It still has not sunk in yet!

For those who will be in the area the show is still on display at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod until July 14th.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by Art in the Barn this weekend! The weather was beautiful and the show was a HUGE success. I would also like to extend a thanks to everyone at the greenbelt association for their hard work which made the weekend so enjoyable. They were extremely organized and each day provided something different for visitors and the artists. I was fortunate enough to have one of my paintings sell at the Thursday evening reception. Thank you to the individual who purchased my work...I can't tell you what it means to me to sell a painting among so many talented artists.

"Winter's End" 18x24 Pastel

I am so proud that my painting "Winter's End has been accepted into the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod (PPSCC) For Pastels Only 2013! This is a HUGE honor and very important goal I set for myself last year. The pastel show was the only juried exhibition I was not accepted into last year and it kind of lit a fire and motivated me to paint this just for the show this year. I don't achieve too many of goals, but what a wonderful feeling to accomplish something you set out to do. Especially something so important to you.

I'd like to show you some of my progress pictures so I can share my thoughts and techniques for "Winter's End." Feel free to comment, I would love to hear your feedback!

"Winter's End" 18x24 Pastel on Gator Foam
Exeter River, Fremont, NH

Progress image #1

Immediately when I saw this location I knew I wanted to paint this large. I contemplated going larger than 18x24. I really struggled with this. If it wasn't for the cost of glass, the frame and the gator foam, I would have painted this 36x48.

I began mounting a piece of Kitty Wallis Museum Grade Sanded Paper to a nice rigid sheet of Gator Foam. This is the first time I painted on a sheet of gator foam and I love it! It is very light, yet very sturdy...a nice surface to receive many layers of pastel.

I started with light block in with local colors beginning with my darks first to establish a nice base of color for my under painting. I lightly wet my canvas with a 50/50 mixture of water and rubbing alcohol. This will help the pastel pigment embed in the tooth of the paper. I try to layer my colors very lightly, building up layers so I can move the pastel around to create a painterly effect. The Kitty Wallis paper takes over twenty layers of pastel before the tooth becomes full. Depending on your layering technique you can acquire different textures and really give your painting a different look.

Progress image #2

Usually when I work with a pastel I paint different sections simultaneously bringing them all up to the same completed level, however in this painting the lower half was going to be dark so i didn't want to struggle with pastel dust dirtying up the bottom half of my painting. I really wanted to have the sky and clouds nearly completed before I worked on the woods and water.

I really wanted the clouds to be spectacular...I wanted them to have color, I wanted them to have motion...the purples really give them life and also the depth essential to their appearance.

I made a nice transition in the sky from left (dark) to right (light) adding interest and making the clouds pop just a bit more. I went even lighter and added some light greens to the sky near the horizon line.

I also started to form the island in the middle, worked on the perspective of the marsh edges, the lighting in the snow and I started the marsh grass over on the right and most importantly, I started to block in my tree which will be placed in the foreground.

Progress image #3

As you can see the painting is almost near completion. I've given the clouds much more form. I've added some more purples and even some Naples to the clouds to promote the warm sun hitting the edges.

I've also brought the marsh grass up to where it needs to be. I will add some more lighter colors to show the sun hitting the grass in some areas a bit later. I love the form of the edge of the marsh grass. Especially on the right side where the tree trunks will be added. I had to complete the little water pools before I added the remainder of the trees.

I really wanted to give this piece the feeling of being a large open space, yet small and cozy. The form on the trees and the way the terrain moves backward really gives this piece the depth it needed to accomplish that. I added some really warm whites to the little snowy hill on the left where the sun is peeking through the trees. The dead tree in the middle stands alone while the warm sun wraps around the tree tops hitting the outer edge of the ice.

Final Painting

In the final stage I lightened up the tree shadows on the ice and really bumped up the sunlight hitting the ice along the edge line of the marsh grass. The grass and the bank of trees on the left also received a little lighter treatment also.

I felt the cloud was still a little bit dark so I went over some of the dark areas with some lighter purples.

At this point my main focus was to bring down the trees in the foreground on the right side of the painting. Now that the rest of the painting is complete I can focus on making the tree visible enough to add depth, but yet not too distracting. I had to make sure the trees had some nice form to them by hitting the left side with some warm whites to show the sun hitting the trees.

In the previous step you can see I also added a little cloud behind the tree to push the horizon back even further. That is one of my favorite parts of the whole painting.

That's about it. I've been back to this area a few times and have photographed it during many different times of the day. It really is a hidden gem!

Thanks for reading!

I don't paint many boats, but this was one I have had my eye on for a while. I love the perspective of the boat which I felt would actually make the subject more challenging, but also making it all the more special if I could pull it off.

The shape of a boat is extremely important...if you don't capture the shape, you'll end up with what looks like a bath tub or something else. I spent a lot of time with the shape of this one...specifically because the angle made it a bit more challenging.

I tend to paint very, very dark, especially in my shadows. Robin has been teaching me to try to use a much tighter value scale and that is what I was focusing on here.

My favorite part is the sand...I love the texture and the colors...and after this winter I think we all could use a little sand!

Big announcement coming tomorrow!

Don't forget to check in tomorrow to hear my exciting news! You won't be disappointed!

"Escape" 16x20 Oil Progression Images

"Escape" 16x20 Oil
Newburyport, MA

Here's the finished product for my latest oil painting. This was a tough one...so many challenges. First, I've always struggled with clouds, so right off the bat I knew this would be difficult. The perspective, the values and the temperature changes were all going to add to the complicated approach needed for this painting. If I had the perspective correct, the values were not. If the values were correct, the temperature was not. If the temperature was correct the perspective was lost...after about four months I'm happy with the final result.

Here's a quick look at how this painting came together. Honestly, I've taken so many pictures of the progression of this painting for so long, I can't find them all so there may be a bit of a jump...especially at the end.

I started off with a very bright underpainting similar to the start of "Beauty Before the Beast."
Quickly blocking in the direction and motion of the clouds beginning with my darkest values first.

Here I started to come in with some local color laying out the shapes within the cloud cover. Placing some sky color in specific locations. Also forming my horizon line and coastal perspective for the water along the marsh. At this point i'm trying VERY hard not to cover my underpainting...this is key for the feel of this painting.

Here the painting really starts to take form. I've come in with a lot of color throughout the sky, the clouds and the foreground. The marsh came together by layering many greens and some blues to pick up the reflected color from the sky. After completing the foreground with brushwork, I laid the final layers with a pallet knife. The texture looks beautiful. As I filled in the water by the marsh, I made sure I left some of the orange from the underpainting to show the reflected light off in the distance behind the clouds.

At the horizon line I've really pushed the colors behind the clouds...adding yellows and blues to really give the painting a powerful feel to the sunset.

I've also started adding the bright colors to the large cloud to give the impact of the bright sunset showing through the heavy cloud cover.

OK...so here we go...

Looks a bit different, huh? Sadly at this point, I was very unhappy with where the painting was. I didn't like the values, temperatures, I lost the perspective, covered the underpainting...wow! The only thing I was satisfied with was the marsh! YAY...not a total lost cause.

At this point I decided to work on a pastel to clear my mind a bit...HAHA three pastels later, I'm back again!

I covered up so much of the orange, I really had to change my approach. First I changed the bright colors at the horizon line. I covered up the yellows and the bright blues and went with more of a subtle transition of the darker sky color from the top. Speaking of the top...the clouds at the top right were not working. I have gone back and forth so much I lost the shape of the clouds and muddied up the sky so I washed them out and came back in with them. I came in with a lot of liquin to create a transparent look to the clouds. I used a very nice mixture of Alizarin, Ultramarine and lightened it up with some Naples Yellow.

I've also really started to give shape to the clouds. I was not happy with the dark clouds on the right. They are too dark and not shapely enough. I've lost the perspective and they would meet the same fate (twice) as the clouds on the top right.

As you see the clouds have been replaced and I love them on the top right. I will continue to fill them in and lighten the clouds on the right. Still not happy with the perspective...they just don't feel like they are ominous and have that intimidating feeling that they needed. I've also lightened up the orange at the horizon line. I've pretty much covered all of that at this point so it no longer works the way I had envisioned. Still happy with the marsh...haven't touched it since I've added it at the beginning.

So here is where I've really jumped ahead with my progression...so much has happened...

One of the most notable is the bright orange at the horizon line is gone. It just wasn't working...was not working with the color scheme anymore. I love it now. I've really lightened up the values and feel the perspective really gives you the feel the clouds start off in the horizon and come up over and consume you. I worked really, really hard paying attention to the warm colors on the left, leading to the cool colors on the right.

My favorite part is the horizon line. I added a nice stroke of the warm sky color at the back of the water peeking out behind the clouds. I love it!

So here it is in all it's glory...another gorgeous sunset in Newburyport! This was tough, this was a challenge...I'm very happy with the result, but happy to put it behind me. I continue to grow when I work on paintings like this. I'm already looking forward to the next cloudy sunset painting.

Thanks for looking, I hope you enjoyed this post and the painting as much as I enjoyed painting it!

See you soon!

-Jeff
